DOLGELLAU
Brief description of fishery:
We have 4 rods here every day during the season.
The Dolgellau Club has approximately 13 miles of some of the best salmon and sea trout fishing in Wales. They also have a beautiful lake, Llyn Cynwch which is fly only and Catch and Release, set in the hills north of Dolgellau Town. The season opens on March 20th and closes on October 17th. They have a website, https://dolgellauangling.cymru with very useful information covering tackle shops, eating out, where to stay and so on.
Some club rules.
Please note that it is now illegal under Welsh Bye-laws to take any salmon.

The Beats.
Bont NewyddBont_Newydd
The beat starts about 13 miles from Bala Town down the A494. You can park near Bryncoedlfor Bridge and fish down by following the old railway line to Dolgamedd. Alternatively you can park on the roadside near Dolgamedd Caravan Site and fish upstream passing the viaduct. Please watch your step as it can be dangerous and slippery.
There is some superb fishing on these waters which form the uppermost beat on the Wnion particularly in August and September. Deep sink lines can be effective in the gullies.
Dolserau BridgeDolserau_Bridge
The Wnion in this area is a good mid-summer beat with holding areas for salmon and sea trout. The Wnion has a great sea trout run. The river here is clear and still wide and fishes well at dusk and night time for both species. You are advised to walk the beat in the daytime prior to any night excursion. Take care wading because the water is fast and the rocks are slippery. The River Clywedog is very good for wild brown trout, but is more suited to bait or spinning than fly.
Dolgellau Town Area Pill_Pool
There is some superb game fishing on these waters. They are excellent for evening fly fishing for sea trout, or “Sewin” as they are called locally. The Wnion is one of the top 5 Welsh rivers for sea trout.
The Reed Pool on the Mawddach, below its junction with the Wnion, is especially good on a rising tide, but beware as the rise in water level is very rapid and dangerous even as far as upstream as Bont-y-Wernddu. Fishing is not allowed after dark on the Reed pool.
The Junction Pool is also very productive. The Pill Pool is another renowned and popular spot where anglers can sometimes be seen waiting for a turn to take part. These lower pools are restocked daily by the incoming tides and create good holding water for sea trout and salmon.
The beat continues up the Wnion on both banks after Pill Pool apart from a stretch which is right bank only between Lady Bridge and the main bridge into Dolgellau.
Parking is available near Bont-y-Wernddu for the lower pools. For the higher stretches there is parking near Dolgellau Town upstream of the junction with the River Arran.
Afon Mawddach
Mawddach
This section of river is very different to the lower reaches of the Wnion and Mawddach. There are several large deep pools in an otherwise very rocky river bed. It can be overwhelming to see the river in full spate. It can also be very dangerous and it is wise to fish the river first on normal levels to see where the holding pools and potential lies are.
Given the right water levels it can be a superb salmon and sea trout river and should not be ignored. Fish tend to run straight through the lower private sections and are held up here. For this reason it can offer superb fishing when the water conditions are right.
Worm, fly, spinner and shrimp are all effective methods depending obviously on water levels and on permitted methods for the time of year. From mid season onwards one nearly always sees salmon turn in some of these pools especially below Berw Gwyn, a beautiful waterfall and a major holding pool. There is a very good section where the Afon Eden joins the Mawddach. Above this the river goes into a deep ravine and it is unwise to fish there unless you know what you are doing; several deep pools in this section are inaccessible.
Llyn Cynwch
Llyn Cynwch opens on March 1st and closes on October 31st. It is stocked every 2-3 weeks with brown, rainbow and blue trout from the hatchery at Pysgota Prysor at Trawsfynydd. Browns of 6lb and rainbows over 13lb have been recorded here. This is a large tract of clear, cold water which fishes well in the evenings. The whole lake can be fished. There is easy access and parking is also easy as indicated on the map. FLY Only and CATCH and RELEASE.
Fly fishing is allowed all round the lake and there is one section marked on the map which is reserved exclusively for fly fishing. The fishing hours are from 8am until the time displayed on the clock in the car park.
